Shogun RFC Sweeps to Glory in Tradition HKFC 10s Showdown China Five Stars Reigns Supreme in Women’s Competition

HONG KONG, 4 April 2024 – The 36th edition of the Tradition HKFC 10s reached a breath-taking conclusion today at the Hong Kong Football Club, with Shogun RFC clinching the Burgess - Wootten Cup in a dramatic finale. The team dazzled to victory with dynamic flair and rapid play, securing their 14-12 victory over Pig Athletic Club BaaBaas, marking a historic moment as they lifted the Cup for the first time in tournament history.
Bright Saena of Shogun RFC was awarded the prestigious best and fairest accolade, while James McGregor of Pig Athletic Club BaaBaas emerged as the top try scorer.
In the Women’s Competition, China Five Stars emerged triumphant with a dramatic finish, claiming the prestigious title. Their 24-0 win against Shandong Rugby Club capped off the expanded second edition of the women's tournament, highlighting the depth of talent and the competitive spirit that defines women's rugby.
Lolagi Visinia and Jed Melvin, co-captains, Shogun RFC said: “We're all from different provinces in New Zealand but have formed a real close bond throughout the tour. Today, we've had a real hard semi-final, and that went down to the money, so I think just the feeling of camaraderie, those last moments that we put it all out there was pretty unreal.”
“For us as a club, it's the first time winning this so it means a lot to everyone that's put on the Jersey – past and present, and all our sponsors, and everyone that’s supported us throughout all these years. So, it's really special.”
China Five Stars Performance Coach, Gordon Tietjens, said: “You're meeting different styles, different types of players from all different countries. So, it's quite an experience in itself. And I found that they adapted really well, the semi-final was really tough, it was a really close semi. The exact goal is to get to the World Series, and also to get into the Olympics. And that was the real idea of bringing this team here, to bring all these young girls here to build some depth, and we're doing that which was awesome. And I think fitness played a big part of it and I've always said that defence wins tournaments and I thought we defended really, really well today.”
Paul Christopher, Tradition HKFC 10s Chairman, said: “As we bring another thrilling chapter of rugby action to a close at the Tradition HKFC 10s, I want to extend my congratulations to all the teams for their outstanding performances. Special congratulations to both the men’s and women’s champions, Shogun RFC and China Five Stars, for showcasing the true essence of the game. I'm deeply grateful to every player, coach, sponsor, and the dedicated fans that filled the stadium, who all contributed to the success of this year's tournament.” "The resurgence of the Tradition HKFC 10s in Hong Kong has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm, and we owe a debt of gratitude to our sponsor Tradition, our supporting sponsors, for all their support that has made this event possible.
